News From Jamul Haven
Everytime I look Marianne’s gift shop
is just looking better and better. You definitely need to check it out
when you visit.
We’re putting up screens in the corner of the pool pavilian to make
a private area for the massages. What could be more relaxing than a
massage with the sound of the waterfalls in the background?
We’re almost done planting the hillside next to the pool with ice
plant. Because the hillside is granite, we needed to use a rock drill to
make every hole for the ice plant. But it does seem to be taking, which
proves that ice plant will grow anywhere. Next big project…dig out the
bridge!
We have a new coffee machine in the pool pavilian. It brews fresh
coffee on demand, and can brew both decaf and regular. So you're never far
from a fresh cup of coffee at Jamul Haven.

Jamul Haven History, Here Comes the
Stage
The Greenleaf family operated several
stage coach lines in San Diego County, including one that made regular
trips into Jamul through Jamacha and Mexican Canyon (the canyon where Jamul
Haven is located). In 1900 they acquired the rights to have their stage
stop at Jamul Haven during the weekly run into Jamul. Jamul Haven was an
ideal location, with access to water in the stream across the street. In
addition, it was just far enough where the horses would be tired out from
the run out from El Cajon. So a circular driveway was installed (highly
unusual for those days) around the house and facilities were set up to
water and change horses at Jamul Haven prior to the long uphill climb into
Jamul proper. A small office was outfitted for use by the stage operator.
During the renovation of Jamul Haven the exterior door was removed, and
interior door was added, and that office is now the bathroom in the Celtic
room.

Romantic Getaway #7: Transportation
Scavenger Hunt
Have a transportion scavenger hunt with
another couple. Each couple’s goal during the day is to ride on as many
modes of transportation as possible, getting pictures of themselves on each
one. To count, you must travel a minimum of 500 feet using that mode of
transportation. At the end of the evening, share pictures and count to see
who found the most number of different ways to get around in San Diego.

Artist-Patron Dinners
(continued)
We’ve had good luck lining up artists
for our Artist-Patron dinner series, so we’re now looking for prospective
patrons who are interested in a free dinner and the opportunity to
potentially help some needy artists. Although large donors are obviously
welcome, you don’t need to think big to help out. One artist is hoping
for people who will donate canvases and paint to allow him to continue
painting. A musician is hoping that someone will hire him to play at an
evening party, or perhaps have him play at a local restaurant. So even if
you’re not ready to build the next wing of a performing arts center, you
too can help out. If you’re ready to be an art patron, drop me an email
(William@jamulhaven.com).

Innkeeper
Update
Regina is back from Europe
and has completed choreographing a number of dance scenes for a local
production of “Big River” to run during August.
William is working with an Orange County Director preparing Eliot for
a “Broadway Bound” workshop. The workshop will be held in Los Angeles
and will feature Broadway experienced singers doing a staged reading of the
musical before a live invitation only audience, followed by a studio
recording of the songs. If you live in the Los Angeles area and you’d
like to attend, let us know. He’s also excited because he just finished
his play “Pound” about the life of Ezra Pound, which wraps up his
“Five Poet Plays” series.
Will just got back from visiting Santa Barbara and then hosted a three
day marathon computer gaming tournament with a dozen of his friends.
Liz found out that the Navy will be transferring her to Whidbey
Island, Washington as her permanent duty station when she finishes her
training this fall. Her husband Daniel has started looking for an aviation
related job somewhere in the Seattle area so that he can follow her out
there.

Clam Chowder: Butter a deep tin basin, strew it thickly with grated
bread-crumbs or soaked cracker; sprinkle some pepper over and bits of
butter the size of a hickory nut and some finely chopped parsley. Put a
double layer of clams, season with pepper, put bits of butter over, then
another layer of soaked cracker; after that clams and bits of butter again;
sprinkle pepper over; add a cup of milk or water, and lastly a layer of
soaked crackers. Turn a plate over the basin and bake in a hot oven for
three-quarters of an hour. Use half a pound of soda biscuit, and a quarter
of a pound of butter for fifty clams.
