News From Jamul Haven
The butterflies are out in force and visiting the gardens. Marianne Beauchamp identified this one as a Western Tiger Swallowtail.

We've installed a new automated coffee machine that makes brewing cappuccinos, espressos, latte macchiatos, and just plain old steamed milk a snap so we're now able to offer these specialty coffee drinks during breakfast.

We've purchased 3 new bicycles that guests can borrow. There are several bike trips from Jamul Haven where you can ride many miles through beautiful scenery in a bike lane the entire way.

We've started a Recession Buster discount program, offering a 10% discount on all rooms for on-line reservations.

We've planted 176 flowering vines along the perimeter fence. These included Ruby Passion Vines, Lavender Trumpet Vines, and Pink Variegated Bower Vines. We've planted 416 trees, bushes and perinneals around the property, including Yew Pines, Sweet Shade, Camphor, Hydrangea, Dwarf Myrtle, Pittosporum, and Calla Lillies.

Innkeeper Update
Elizabeth is back in San Diego for the next few weeks in U.S. Navy Legal School. She's finding that she likes the whole legal thing better than she expected.

Marianne has been riding her bike and swimming 50 laps in the pool every day. On those occassions when William is able to go with her on a bike ride, he can't keep up!

William's play "Dickinson" finished a very successful run in San Diego. Every performance was sold out, and the theater box-office needed to turn people away. His new play "Bonzo" will have a free developmental reading in San Diego at 3 PM on Saturday, 29 August. Regina is directing the production. We'll send out an invitation with the location in the next day or two.

It appears that the bones were not set quite right in Regina's foot, so she needed to have an "adjustment" to get the foot healing right. Hopefully, everything is on-track now for the foot to be completely healed and ready for dancing. She starts at SDSU in a couple of weeks.
Hints from Yesteryear
Hints from "The Everyday Cook-Book," (c) 1889 and found in the Jamul Haven Angel House.

Chilblains: Chilblains are most irritating to children. The following is an infallible cure for unbroken chilblaines: Hydrochloric acid, diluted, one-quarter ounce; hydrocyanic acid, diluted, 30 drops; camphor water, six ounces. This chilblain lotion cures mild cases by one application. It is a deadly poison, and should be kept under lock and key. A responsible person should apply it to the feet of children. This must not be applied to broken chilblains.

Fricasseed Rabbits: The best way of cooking rabbits is to fricassee them. Cut them up, or disjoint them. Put them into a stew-pan; season them with Cayenne pepper, salt and some chopped parsley. Pour in a pint of warm water (or of veal broth) and stew it over a slow fire till the rabbits are quite tender; adding (when they are about half done) some bits of butter rolled in flour. Just before you take it from the fire, enrich the gravy with a gill or more of thick cream with some nutmeg grated into it. Stir the gravy well, but take care not to let it boil after the cream is in, lest it curdle. Put the pieces of rabbit on a hot dish, and pour the gravy over them.
