If you're trying to think of a last minute gift idea, what about a gift certificate for Jamul Haven? Gift certificates come in any denomination, and can be easily purchased from the link below or by calling or emailing.
We've had stormy weather. Our 100 year old oak tree blew over, luckily away from the house so there was no damage other than the loss of the tree itself. The roots pulled right out of the ground, pulling up irrigation pipes in the process.
We've installed over 7,500 feet of drip irrigation lines to conserve water. Now that we've reached a logical stopping point on that project, it's time to get back to work on the river water feature.
We still have rooms available between Christmas and New Year's if you'd like to get away for a mini-vacation during the holidays.
Congratulations to honeymooners Kyle and Susie. Happy anniversary to Jamie and Scott; Suzy and Jerry; and Lisa and Hugh. Happy birthday to Lindsay. Happy birthday to Mary, who rented the entire house for her friends with the San Diego Vintage Dance Society.

Marianne has been the hostest with the mostest, cooking up a storm for some major holiday parties. We had our 20 neighbors at a formal sit-down dinner for our annual neighborhood party; roughly 50 children to our annual gingerbread house/candy train making party; 20 people to a Victorian clothing dinner-dance; a woman's luncheon; and still to come our caroling party and book group luncheon. Whw. She's also been taking a jazz dance class with some friends of hers.
The Ice Princess continues to run at Viejas through New Years. Regina is dancing the role on Fridays and Saturdays.
Will has developed a real talent for baking. He made a coffee cake for a wine and dessert party and it looked delicious. Unfortunately, he took the entire cake to the party so I never got any!
William is done working in San Francisco, but he's now working in Sacramento. There will be a reading of his play N.I.C.E. in San Diego on February 5th. More to come on that. His book "Five Poet Plays" was reviewed in US Review. Among other things, the review said,
"The distinctive creative forms and honest portrayals featured in each of Roetzheim's Five Poet Plays, will not only offer audiences rich insights into the respective poetic and literary works and lives of each of these extraordinary talents, but in much the same way a single poem can capture the essence of its poet, each of the five plays captures the talent and essence of Roetzheim."
Liz is now officially deployed overseas (that's her in the picture above). Here's a summary of her trip thus far (extracted from one of her emails):
I wanted to give you a little update from the desert. I was a little brief in my first email because we were busy packing up and getting ready to leave. Here are some details from my trip. I flew a P-3 out with my crew over 5 days, around the world. It was my first flight as a pilot out of the states, as a qualified co-pilot (as opposed to a qualified pilot - which is actually less qualified) and on my first deployment. It was a lot of firsts, but it went pretty smoothly. I think the coolest parts were flying over the Bermuda triangle and watching the sun go down. Then flying over Spain and watching the sun come up. And lastly, flying over the Greek islands. The desert was pretty desert-like and bland. Why anyone chooses to live here is beyond me.
So we arrived in theater a couple days ago. They assigned us all a CHU (cubical housing unit - I think) and because I'm the only female officer I got my own. Which is good and bad. It's good for sleeping and skyping, bad because I'm the only female officer so I'm separated from my crew and this makes coordinating our down time really difficult. I end up entertaining myself a lot. My CHU was an absolute disaster when I got here. Let me just start with this, there were 32 air-fresheners stuck on walls, lockers, a/c units, etc throughout my little CHU. Hmmm... why do they need so many air-fresheners?? There was trash, dust, dirt, and sticky syrupy stuff all over the floor. Stained dirty sheets and pillows in the lockers, the fridge was moldy and leaking black goop in addition to yellow water, there was hair and gross stuff in every drawer and on every shelf. By the grace of God, these disgusting previous tenants left a whole slew of cleaning supplies. Obviously, they were all brand new and never opened. I spent the first 2 hours bleaching my room. Just enough to get it clean enough so I could pass out after our long day of flying.
Now for the really cool part, the food. Oh my gosh, there is so much food, everywhere. And since we obviously have no means to shop, cook, etc, it's all free. I'm still wrapping my head around this concept. I mean, you go into the dining facility and there are so many options. I have to make one whole loop to survey my options before I commit. I wouldn't want to get grilled cheese and then find out there were hamburgers or something better (that happened today). There are also energy drinks, iced coffee, juices, and bottles and bottles of water. Everywhere you go. Cases and cases. I'm staying very hydrated here. So there I was, walking out of the dining facility yesterday, totally content with my meal, when, what's this? Ice-cream? Cakes? Soft-serve? I find the desert section. I found it about 6 mo. too soon. I fear for my thighs. I really do. It takes immense self control to pick just one item. It's a daily struggle.

Hints from "The Everyday Cook-Book," (c) 1889 and found in the Jamul Haven Angel House.
Stye in the Eye: Styes are little abscesses which form between the roots of the eyelashes, and are rarely larger than a small pea. The best way to manage them is to bathe them frequently with warm water; or in warm poppy-water, if very painful. When they have burst, use an ointment composed of one part of citron ointment and four of spermaceti, well rubbed together, and smear along the edge of the eyelid. Give a grain or two of calomel with five or eight grains of rhubarb, according to the age of the child, twice a week. The old-fashioned and apparently absurd practice of rubbing the stye with a ring, is as good and speedy a cure as that by any process of medicinal application; though the number of times it is rubbed, or the quality of the ring and direction of the strokes, has nothing to do with its success. That pressure and the friction excite the vessels of the part, and cause an absorption of the effused matter under the eyelash. The edge of the nail will answer as well as a ring.

Recipies from "The Everyday Cook-Book," (c) 1889 and found in the Jamul Haven Angel House.
In choosing poultry, the best way to determine whether it is young, is to try the skin under the leg or wing; if it is easily broken it is young; or turn the wing backwards; if the joint yields readily, it is tender; a fat fowl is best for any purpose.
After a chicken or fowl is killed, plunge it into a pot of scalding hot water; then pluck off the feathers, taking care not to tear the skin; when it ispicked clean, roll up a sheet of white wrapping paper, set fire to it, and singe off all the hairs. Poultry should be carefully picked and nicely singed.
If a fowl is fresh killed the vent will be close and the flesh have a pleasant smell.
