Marianne has been putting up the Christmas decorations with the help of Tina and Lidia, and she's just about done. Momma has done her best to help by following Marianne around and watching. We'll definitely be decorated by Thanksgiving. For those who have never visited us around Christmas, she turns the house into a winter wonderland where every room has a different Christmas theme. Regina's boyfriend Travis even pitched in and put up Christmas lights all over the outside of the main house.
We had to cut down the Ficus tree overhanging the back walk because the roots were going to damage the foundation. We've been slowly converting the landscape irrigation from spray to drip, trying to conserve water.
We still have rooms available on Thanksgiving. The holiday rates are in effect, but they include a complete Thanksgiving feast Thursday afternoon.
Dan and Cari visited from Michigan while Dan worked on some factory equipment down in Tecate. Lea and Randy celebrated an anniversary with us. Bill and Chris, Steve and Doreen, and Richard and Samantha celebrated birthdays with us. If you have a birthday or anniversary coming up, consider celebrating the occasion with us.

In previous newsletters we’ve talked about the fact that Jamul was the first place to introduce canned, process olives under the leadership of Charles Gifford. Another little known fact about Jamul is that it is the first place in California (and probably on the west coast) to successfully manufacture Portland Cement. In 1889 Henry Burton and his partners formed the Jamul Portland Cement Manufacturing company to capitalize on limestone deposits in Jamul. The kilns were built and successfully began to manufacture high quality cement to compete with cement imported from Europe. Unfortunately, a planned railroad line extension through Jamul to Yuma never happened, so the fuel for the kilns and the finished product needed to be shipped by wagon. This, combined with a glut of low cost European cement, but the factory out of business within a few years. But the kilns are still standing, and they are probably the only existing example of that early technology for manufacturing Portland Cement.

The Ice Princess show has opened at Viejas, so if you have a chance, head out that way to see Regina dancing in the show.
We all went up to Whidbey Island to spend the weekend with Elizabeth prior to her deployment. It was the first time in quite awhile that the entire family has been together, and it was a wonderful experience. Marianne's Thanksgiving dinner was a highlight, and it was a lot of fun to fly wth Daniel, Will, and Regina out to Friday Island in a little Cessna. Regina flew the plane on the way out, and Will flew the plane on the way back.
Marianne forgot to put the Prius in park and the car rolled down the hill, with her half-way in and half-way out. Thank goodness she wasn't hurt.
William continues to spend a lot of time in San Francisco.

Hints from "The Everyday Cook-Book," (c) 1889 and found in the Jamul Haven Angel House.
Bites of Dogs: The only safe remedy in case of a bite from a dog suspected of madness is to burn out the wound thoroughly with a red-hot iron, or with lunar caustic, for fully eight seconds, so as to destroy the entire surface of the wound. Do this as soon as possible, for no time is to be lost. Of course it will be expected that the partstouched with the caustic will turn black.
