Enjoy Your Stay at the Angel
House
The house was built in 1890 but has now been
completely restored, including state-of-the-art air
conditioning and heating with individual controls
for all rooms, new electrical, new plumbing, and
complete sound isolation--all while maintaining a
respect for the architectural history of the house.
The majority of wood in the house structure is
the original redwood, and most of the interior
trim is scented Mahogany.
Rock Back to a Slower Time
The house features a large wrap-around porch and
covered balcony perfect for rocking while enjoying the
afternoon breeze.  The porch is redwood, with maple
railings and hand cut decorative scroll work in the railings
and spandrels.  The view overlooks the Steele Canyon golf
course, and don't be surprised to see some of our
free-range chickens scratching in the yard looking for food.
You might also notice the hand carved angel front-door,
brought over from a baptistry being torn down in Poland.
Stained Glass in Every Window
These are the original weight and pulley windows, and
you'll be amazed at how easily they operate after more
than 100 years.  The house contains a large
representative sample of stained glass window design
commonly used in the late 1800s.  You'll notice that
these windows have the heavier lead caning rather
than the lighter copper-foil used in stained glass
windows after 1920.
Authentic Wallpaper Patterns
The wallpaper was replaced as part of the renovation, but
the patterns used for the replacement wallpaper were true
to the time period, adding to the rich environment
characteristic of Victorian decor.
We almost called it Mahogany Manor
Every room of the house is fitted with mahogany paneling
or wainscotting, baseboards, crown molding, and in some
cases, floors.  Scented mahogany was used rather than
the more common species of mahogany, and there are
examples of wood grain patterns and hand workmanship
that you can't find anywhere else.
The Peacock Room
During the Victorian era the ceilings were considered as
important as any other surface when decorating.  Each
room features authentic tin ceiling tiles.  The company we
used for replacement tiles has been making tin ceiling tiles
since 1858.  The tiles are different in virtually all rooms.
The Peacock Room features a roomy bedroom with queen
bed, private bath with tub and shower, sitting room with
queen sized futon bed, and a porch.
Truly Unique Bathroom Floors
Each bathroom features extensive, detailed mosaic work.  These murals are
created by hand from hand cut pieces of naturally colored marble,
individually set to create the pictures and patterns that you see.  The four
mosaics each contain between 15,000 and 50,000 individual pieces of
marble.
And While We're in the Bathroom
Be sure to notice the Victorian style bath fixtures.  Each bathroom features a
pull-chain toilet.  The claw foot bathtubs were purchased from the owner of
an 1890s brothel that was being torn down in Kansas, then each tub was
fully refinished.
A Copper Farmhouse Kitchen
The farmhouse kitchen features a genuine copper stamped
tile ceiling (not copper painted), hand beaten copper farm
sink made in Greece, and 1858 style stove (upgraded with
modern capabilities).  We would have gone for an 1800s
refrigerator, but couldn't find anyone to deliver blocks of ice
every day.  But don't forget to visit the original root cellar
dug into the hill behind the house.
Bath House
The bath house offers convenient restroom, shower, and
changing facilities  The bath house also offers therapeutic
massage, pedicures, and manicures by appointment.
Morning yoga classes for beginner, intermediate, or
advanced practitioners are also available by appointment.
English Gardens
Stroll through our more than 1,000 feet of garden pathways
past park benches, decorative urns overflowing with
flowers, and statuary.
Pub
We feature an on-site pub with draft beer, wine, and mixed
drinks.  Relax in front of a fire in the pub lounge, or just
enjoy a drink with friends.  Enjoy some freshly popped
popcorn or a handful of snack mix.  The pub is also a good
place to catch your favorite sporting event on television.
Game Room
A spiral staircase takes you from the pub to the 900 square
foot game room fully equipped with a full size billiards
table, electronic darts, ping pong table, Foosball table, air
hockey, and assorted board games.
